On Jan.5, 2008, an on-line phonetic argument was listened by thousands of stutterers throughout China in the Internet.

The argument was between a doctor Huang Yi (Shanghai city), and a policeman Yuan Yunlu (Jiangxi province), both of them claimed to have been severe stutterer many years ago and regained fluency. Doctor Huang thinks that stuttering is caused by many factors; it can be improved by some techniques together with psychological adjustment. However, policeman Yuan thinks that stuttering is only caused by psychological factor, it will disappear automatically if you don’t care about it, no technique is effective in the treatment of stuttering.AP7P U!~{

The important audio-argument may be recorded in the history of stuttering research in China. Both of the arguers displayed fluency in their argument. Policeman Yuan attacked the current therapies for stuttering and scolded these methods as “cheating”, and he thinks that doctor Huang is a “swindler”. Doctor Huang rebuked Yuan who was supposed to be lack of comprehensive knowledge about stuttering, and he thinks that Yuan’s personal success is not representative of most of the stutterers.1t X D5X'I

This on-line phonetic argument was indeed the collision between two schools about stuttering in China. Policeman Yuan is a frantic advocator of the late Chinese speech-language therapist Zhang Jinhui, who thought that stuttering was “normal phenomena”, and stuttering disease could only be cured by psychological adjustment. It is unfortunate that Policeman Yuan is so strong in his beliefs that just because he was able to make his stuttering disappear by working solely on what he refers to as the "psychological" aspect, that is what causes stuttering for everyone and is how all stuttering should be treated. It is something that I see often -- a person who stutters who finds he way out of a stuttering problem, thinks that he has THE answer or solution to stuttering that will work for everyone. There are a lot of examples on the internet! It is also unfortunate that he labels you a "swindler" and thinks that speech therapy is "cheating.":_$c \ k5V!] U#Y9{&K
